Cue Cards — Trailer + Episode 1 (The Sower)

How to use these: one card per take. Look down SILENTLY → get the thought → look UP → say it your way to the lens. Never talk while your eyes are down. Lines in bold CAPS labels:

  • VERBATIM = say it word-for-word (it's a hook or the signoff — these carry the brand)
  • READ FROM PAGE = pick the page up and read it openly on camera — that's a performance move at a prep desk, not cheating
  • everything else = prompts; your own words are BETTER than the script's

Card 1 — Cold open​

VERBATIM: "Here are two ways to start a sermon on John chapter 3."

  • Way one: "Nicodemus came to Jesus at night" → true, accurate… congregation checks the bulletin
  • Way two — READ FROM PAGE:

Jerusalem has gone quiet. The public debates are over. Torches burn low against the stone. And a teacher of Israel moves through the dark with a question he does not want overheard.

  • Same verse, same facts → now they're watching him

Card 2 — The move has a name​

  • It's called Show, Don't Tell — we do it every week at this desk
  • The problem: we summarize Bible scenes too fast → one topic sentence, then 20 min explaining a scene nobody saw
  • Show Don't Tell = slow the camera down; let people SEE it first
  • "By night" isn't a time stamp → secrecy, fear, longing, faith without courage yet
  • The detail starts preaching before you make a single point

Card 3 — The guardrails (slow down — this is the trust moment)​

  • This is imaginative retelling — and we SAY so, out loud: "imagine the scene with me"
  • No invented doctrine · no made-up details smuggled in as facts
  • The scene serves the sermon — never the show for its own sake
  • If it puts words in Scripture's mouth → it's gone
  • "That's the deal at this desk, every week"

Card 4 — What happens at this desk​

EPISODE 1 — The Sower (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23)

Card 1 — Cold open​

VERBATIM: "Here's a sermon title you would never use: God Is a Bad Farmer."

  • Stay with me — farmer throws seed on a footpath, rocks, thorns
  • No farmer in Galilee farmed like this
  • That one detail might be your whole sermon
  • (stinger drops in here in post) → VERBATIM: "This week: the Parable of the Sower, Matthew 13. Let's prep."

Card 2 — The text in 60 seconds​

  • Jesus leaves the house, crowd so big he preaches from a boat — first floating pulpit
  • Sower sows: path/birds · rocky/fast-up-fast-dead · thorns/choked · good soil → 100x, 60x, 30x
  • RARE: Jesus interprets his own parable — seed = word of the kingdom, soils = hearers
  • A parable WITH inspired commentary attached: a gift… and a trap (we'll get there)

Card 3 — LensLines™ READ EACH FROM PAGE — then one ad-lib reaction each​

Classic: "The word of the kingdom is scattered with reckless generosity, and the harvest belongs to God."

Pastoral: "Some of your sowing will look wasted. None of it is." (— that one's for the preacher too — you've preached into hard soil for years; so did Jesus)

Edgy: "God wastes grace like a farmer who never learned to aim."

  • "If one of those unlocks the sermon — take it. It's yours now."

Card 4 — Show, Don't Tell READ FROM PAGE (label it first: "imaginative retelling — a preaching move, not exegesis")​

It's barely light. The farmer hoists the seed bag onto his shoulder and starts walking — and throwing. He doesn't check the ground first. Seed lands on the packed dirt of the footpath, and the birds are already dropping out of the sky behind him. Seed bounces off the limestone shelf hiding under an inch of soil. Seed disappears into the thorn patch at the field's edge. Anyone watching from the road would say the man is careless. And he just keeps throwing.

  • Now they're not analyzing four soil types — they're watching a farmer who refuses to ration seed
  • That's the FEEL of the kingdom before you explain anything

Card 5 — The detail you missed​

  • Thirty, sixty, a hundredfold — we hear a nice crescendo
  • A Galilean farmer would LAUGH: a good year = 7–10x the seed
  • A hundredfold isn't a good harvest — it's an impossible one; ends a famine, rewrites a family's future
  • The parable ends in absurd, economy-breaking abundance — the harvest buries the losses
  • "Preach the math."

Card 6 — Sermon Title Clinic​

  • Safe: "The Parable of the Sower" → accurate, invisible — labels the passage instead of opening it
  • Fresh: "The Wasteful Farmer" → sermon's about the sower now; curiosity before verse one
  • Edgy: "God Is a Bad Farmer" → reverent irony — God's "bad" farming is extravagant grace
  • "Would you put that on the sign out front? Tell me in the comments."

Card 7 — Do's and Don'ts (from the SermonWise prep pack)​

  • DON'T: the soil self-audit — 40 minutes of "which soil are you?" → tender people go home convinced they're the thorns. Burden, not good news. Jesus never tells anyone to improve their soil.
  • DO: let the SOWER be the subject. Farmer sows, seed grows, harvest comes — every active verb is God's
  • Application from that = invitation, not anxiety

Card 8 — Walk the path to Jesus (don't jump — walk)​

  • Isaiah 55 underneath: rain waters the earth → "so shall my word be — it shall not return empty"
  • John: the Word became flesh
  • Jesus, heading to the cross: "unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies…"
  • The sower becomes the seed — buried — and the harvest of that one seed? "Count it Easter morning. Keep counting."
  • Not a hidden code — the Bible's own seed-line, walked forward

Card 9 — The outline (Classic Expository)​

  • Big idea — READ FROM PAGE: "The kingdom comes by God's extravagant sowing, and the harvest is certain."
  1. A farmer who won't ration seed (vv. 3-7)
  2. The honest news about hard ground — your people have lived all four soils, sometimes in one week (vv. 18-22)
  3. The impossible harvest — grace outruns the losses (vv. 8, 23)
  4. So sow, and listen — without scorekeeping, without armor. Invitation, not audit.
