Quill Test Segment — Episode 2, "Do's and Don'ts" as a two-hander
Status: EXPERIMENT. Replaces Episode 2 §7 (Wheat and Weeds, hub-scripts-batch1.md) only for this test. The original solo version stays as fallback. Run for 2–3 episodes, judge by per-chapter retention vs. other segments + comment sentiment, then expand or retire.
Quill — character bible (the rules that keep this safe)
- Who: the SermonWise prep pack, speaking. An AI research assistant who lives at the desk. Named for the channel's quill mark.
- Status: junior. Eager, fast, precise with facts, occasionally too big for its britches — and always, warmly, under Pastor John's authority.
- What Quill does: facts and craft-mechanics only — word studies, background data, the prep-pack do's and don'ts, title options, lens lines, stats.
- What Quill NEVER does (bright lines): preach, pray, exegete unsupervised, do application, touch grief or pastoral tenderness. The moment a segment turns pastoral, Quill goes quiet and John carries it alone.
- The standing bit: roughly once per appearance, Quill oversteps (offers to draft application, a closing prayer, "your sermon") and John shuts it down — "Nobody writes the sermon here, Quill." The gag IS the brand promise, dramatized. Don't run the same overstep twice; vary it.
- Voice (TTS): Cartesia — George - Composed Consultant (
4bc3cb8c-adb9-4bb8-b5d5-cbbef950b991), chosen 2026-06-11. Composed British "capable assistance" register: instantly legible as an AI assistant, maximum contrast with John's warm delivery, and the deadpan steadiness makes Quill's dry lines land. Runner-up if George disappoints on listen: Theo - Modern Narrator (79f8b5fb-2cc8-479a-80df-29f7a7cf1a3e) — younger, crisp, modern. Pre-rendered samples:knowledge/references/cartesia-voices/samples/<id>.mp3. Any TTS generation = sequential calls only (Rule #21). - On screen: NOT a humanlike avatar. A simple card: the gold quill mark with a pulse/waveform while Quill speaks, captions styled in gold. Clean, cheap, no uncanny valley, no disclosure mess.
- Disclosure (append to description of every Quill episode): "Quill is an AI voice (text-to-speech). Quill's lines are written and reviewed by John Moelker. No AI writes the sermons here — that's rather the point."
The script (~110 seconds, replaces Ep. 2 §7 at 6:40)
[JOHN] Time for Do's and Don'ts, straight from the SermonWise prep pack — and this week, something new. The prep pack is going to deliver them itself. Say hello, Quill.
[QUILL-01] Hello, pastors. I'm Quill. I live in the prep pack. I've read every commentary on Matthew thirteen so Pastor John can pretend he has.
[JOHN] (beat — look at the card, back to camera) We're working on his manners. Quill: the don't.
[QUILL-02] Don't hand out weed-identification badges. In the parable, the servants ask, "Do you want us to go and pull the weeds?" The master's answer is no. If your sermon helps people figure out who the weeds are, you have preached the exact move the master forbids.
[JOHN] And that's the trap with this text — it feels faithful. Zeal for a pure field, chapter and verse in hand. And it's the one move the master refuses.
[QUILL-03] Correct. I also ran the numbers: darnel is visually identical to wheat until the heads form. Mid-season, human accuracy at telling them apart is approximately zero. Your certainty arrives long before the evidence does.
[JOHN] "Approximately zero." (small smile) Write that on the study door. The do?
[QUILL-04] The do: preach the master's patience as good news. I've also drafted three application points, a closing illustration, and a short benediction—
[JOHN] Nope.

[JOHN] Nobody writes the sermon here, Quill. Not even you. Especially not you.
[QUILL-06] Noted. The sermon is yours. I just carry the tools.
[JOHN] (to camera, and the register settles — Quill's card fades out here; this part is yours alone) He does carry them well. But here's the do, pastor, and it's not a technique. Somewhere in your pews this Sunday is a person who's already decided they're the weed. Too compromised. Too tangled. Too late. And the harvest hasn't come — the Lord of the field is still saying "let it grow." That patience isn't negligence. It's mercy with a calendar. Preach the fire in verse forty-two honestly — the text does — but let God carry it, on God's schedule. Not yours, and not theirs.

QUILL-04/05 timing is the whole gag: John's "Nope." must cut QUILL-04 off mid-word. Generate 04 complete and trim the tail in the edit.
Recording method (single-mic Snowball setup)
- Lock the Quill lines, generate the six WAVs, load them on your phone in order.
- On set: one earbud (only you hear Quill — speaker playback would bleed into the Snowball). Play each line at the script point, react naturally, leave a half-second beat before responding. Real reactions are what sell a two-hander.
- In Descript: lay the clean Quill WAVs into the timeline where you heard them; add the Quill card (gold quill mark + waveform) for the duration of each line; style Quill's captions in gold.
- Studio Sound: apply to John's track only — TTS is already clean; processing it can artifact.
Measurement (how we decide if Quill stays)
- Per-chapter retention on §7 vs. the same chapter in Episodes 1/3 (solo version) — the A/B instrument is built into the chapter format
- Comment sentiment: specifically watch for pastor pushback on the AI's presence vs. delight; reply to all of it
- If it works: Quill gets ONE chapter per episode (never more), and we cut a Quill spoke Short as a crossover test ("My AI assistant tried to write my sermon")
- If it flops: §7 reverts to solo; Quill retires with zero format damage
